Start an Adaptive Program at Your Gym

These are the places we send coaches first when they start adaptive training: where to learn, what equipment helps and what the evidence says.

Where Coaches Start

Education, equipment and evidence, from the partners our affiliate gyms use.

Equip Products

Purpose-built adaptive fitness equipment for when your gym is ready to add it.

What You Need to Know

How do I start an adaptive program at my gym?

Start with one athlete and one coach. Talk with the athlete about their goals and how they move, train with the equipment you already have, and build from what works. Bloc Life can talk through how our affiliate gyms began and what to expect in your first few months.

Do coaches need a certification to train adaptive athletes?

No certification is required to coach an adaptive athlete, and none replaces listening to the person in front of you. Coaches who want formal education often begin with the Adaptive Training Academy.

What equipment do I need for adaptive fitness?

Less than most gyms expect. Much of adaptive training uses equipment already on the floor, adapted to the athlete. Equip Products makes purpose-built adaptive equipment when a gym is ready to add it.

How do I adapt a workout for a wheelchair user?

Keep the stimulus and change the shape of the movement. Ask the athlete what they can control, what they want to work toward and where they need support, then scale load, range and pace from there. Our articles work through specific movements.

How do I find adaptive athletes in my community?

Through the people who already work with them: therapy clinics, adaptive sports organizations, rehabilitation programs and word of mouth from the first athlete you train. Bloc Life can introduce you to partners in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

What does it cost a gym to run an adaptive program?

That depends on your space, your coaches and how many athletes you serve. Contact Bloc Life and we’ll walk you through what our affiliate gyms have needed.

Ask Us About Adaptive Coaching

Bring the question you haven’t found an answer to: scaling a movement, setting up a first class, finding athletes or running a Bloc Life program. A coach will get back to you.
